Why 'Respect for dementia'?

Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust started the 'respect for dementia' campaign in December 2008 in partnership with the Suffolk Alzheimer’s Society, Suffolk Family Carers, Suffolk Age Concern and User Views. We set about asking people in Suffolk about their experiences of living with dementia.

We wanted to hear directly from people living with the diagnosis and their family carers and friends – to find out what it means to them. In all we spoke to over 50 people.

The name of the campaign came from one of the groups that we spoke to. They told us that the attitudes of other people – sometimes close family and friend – make a big difference to how they cope.

One person said that they had gradually lost all of their old friends and even family had withdrawn.

This campaign is designed to raise public awareness of the need to understand and accept dementia – and to support people living with the condition.
